Wellington is one of the hippest, coolest capitals in the world. That is probably why there are so many things to see and do. That means there are several things you must see and do when you visit! Take a look at our list and add these items to your vacation agenda the next time you find yourself in Wellington.
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
This is one of the most intriguing places for young and old alike to visit. The exhibits are interactive, and always feature a bit of innovation. They tell the story of New Zealand in a way that relates to the geology, biology, culture, and social history of the area. General admission is free; that's always a good thing. However, you might have to pay to see some exhibits so check prices before you go.
Mount Victoria
This is Wellington's largest mountain. Enjoy some of the most panoramic views of the harbor when you scale Mount Victoria and snap some photos from the Lookout. Planes come in and out of the airport, boats sail in and out through the harbor, and of course many clouds drift lazily overhead. If you get hungry from all that walking or driving up the mountain, that's no problem — You can grab a meal at the nearby restaurant and enjoy it on the green.
Historic Cable Car
This working wonder is a bit of history as well as an icon in its own right. It travels from Lambton Quay to Kelburn. Once you reach the top there is a vantage point that affords spectacular pictures. There is also a museum on site that gives a bit of cable car history as well as the Carter Observatory. Be prepared to see interactive displays, and take a virtual voyage across the stars the likes of which you have never seen. Once you arrive safely back on earth, you can take a tour through the scenic botanical gardens.
Food and Drink
Wellington is home to its fair share of bars and restaurants. In fact, it’s said to have more per person than New York City! Also, the city is known as the craft beer capital of the world, so make sure you try several! Then there's the coffee, which is a legend in its own right. You want to make sure you have a cup or five while you are there.
Shopping
For retail therapy, there's nothing like Cuba Street. Of course, most people are familiar with the bucket fountain. It is the area’s most famous landmark, so make sure you snap a picture next to it, but beyond, there's so much more. The street comes alive the night with entertainers, puppeteers, and fire masters. They also feature some of the neighborhood’s most colorful and vibrant shops. It all creates an eclectic experience that is the perfect way to end a long day.
Wander the Waterfront
The beach in Wellington is perhaps its most beautiful asset. It's a public space that is quite walkable and is peppered with the best little cafés, parks, and ice cream shops. There are also several bars and a myriad of activities to enjoy such as jogging, cycling, or crocodile biking. In addition, you can be party to one of their three markets held every weekend, then shoot towards the bay for some sun and fun.
Wellington is a diverse place filled with activities that are perfect for people who like to be on the go. If adventuring and exploring our right up your alley, then our list is perfect for you. Enjoy your time in New Zealand's capital, and make sure to buy plenty of souvenirs while you are there.
