How to Dodge Delays and Other Mishaps While Traveling

With so much going on, it’s no surprise that airports are a hotspot for travel delays and interruptions. Here are some useful tips and a few good reminders for avoiding the chaos that can arise while traveling.
Before heading to the airport:
—Book the first flight out to avoid crowds later in the day.
—Work with a licensed travel insurance advisor to secure protection for you and your trip.
—Travel with only the necessities, especially ones that can serve multiple purposes, and be mindful of items that could set off security alarms. Pack comfortable, slip-on type shoes so they’re easy to take off and put on.
—Weigh luggage and adjust or purge the contents to avoid overweight baggage fees. Pack a portable scale and do the same before your return trip.
—Take note of travel insurance policy and emergency assistance numbers.
—Check your flight status regularly. If there’s a delay, stay home until you have a good idea of when it might clear to help avoid crowds altogether.
—Check in online to shorten the time you spend in line at the airport.
—Download the TripWise app from the Apple or Google Play stores for flight status, real-time travel alert and security information from the Government of Canada and more.
At the airport/in transit:
—Factor in traffic, the weather and other possible delays when heading to the airport to help ensure you get there ahead of the crowd.
—Check in your luggage to avoid feeling bogged down by unwieldy bags.
—Take advantage of motorized walkways, airport trains, and golf carts if you need extra help getting around.
—Complete customs forms and ensure they’re in hand before you land.
—Allow ample time between flights to help ensure you make your connection.
—Be prepared to present your passport and other documents and know information like the address and phone number where you’ll be staying before you get to security and customs.
