Colorado is primarily known for the plethora of outdoor adventure opportunities that abound around each and every corner. But before you head out to ski or hike, it’s worth devoting a bit of time to the state’s bourgeoning capital city: Denver. The Mile High City boasts gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains, pet (and bike) friendly streets, an impressive art culture, mouthwatering microbreweries — and that’s just the start!
Get ready for an epic introduction to the Centennial State with this list of six cool things to do in Denver, Colorado:
1. The Colorado State Capitol Building

The Colorado State Capitol is perhaps the emblem of the "Mile High City" slogan. You'll find the nickname inscribed into the 13th step of the building, marking the exact location where you are one mile above sea level.
The state capitol offers free historical tours Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but since tours can get busy, it's recommended to reserve a spot ahead of time.
While you’re there, score some unbeatable views of Denver from the top of the building. State law actually prohibits the construction of any structure that would block the view of the surrounding 200-plus mountain peaks, so rest assured, the vista will be waiting for you when you arrive.
2. The Blue Bear

Every Denver local knows about this iconic sculpture. You'll discover the 40-foot-tall blue bear snooping into the window of the Convention Center. It’s a great photo opportunity for tourists and locals alike.
3. Museum of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has been providing fantastic educational adventures for more than 100 years. At just $15 for adults and $10 for juniors, plan to have a full day packed of dinosaurs, astronauts and African wildlife. Venture to the terrace for an unbeatable view of snowy mountain peaks and a great glimpse into Denver’s architecture.
4. Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater

By day, you'll find college track students hustling over the venue's nearly three miles of seats, by night you'll witness countless stars speckled over the city's skyline. This iconic amphitheater was built into naturally occurring rock formations making the overall atmosphere an unbeatable choice for a concert venue. Check out the amphitheater’s scheduled performances or visit when it's vacant for an unforgettable experience.
5. Mount Evans

Just 60 miles outside of Denver, Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America. Drive just short of the top and witness incredible views, or opt to hike the whole way!
There are various trails offered on Mount Evans, with the Chicago Lakes trail perhaps taking the cake. Hiking this 10-mile trail is well worth the soul-rejuvenating views you'll witness along the way. It's common to see mountain goats and other wildlife running through the evergreens.
Time it right and visit when the snow has freshly fallen around the beginning of November for a trek through a winter wonderland. Don't come too late in the winter season, though, or the mountain will be closed off due to the icy conditions.
6. 5280 Burger Bar & The RiNo Art District

This deliciously eco-friendly burger joint is made completely out of recycled shipping containers. Make sure to save room for dessert —they're scooping out fire-smoked soft served. After placing a freshly burnt log into the batter, they strain the batter out and freeze it. It might sound a little unusual, but this ice cream tastes just like a summer campfire in your mouth.
When you've had about all the delicious food you can fit in your stomach, step down the street to the RiNo Art District and get lost among the never-ending walls of unique street art. Each wall is a unique reflection of its artist, and rarely will you find two walls remotely alike. Posted subtly in a window among the murals is a small sheet of paper with writing resembling that of a black crayon reading: "We have to create. It's the only thing louder than destruction." A profound statement, and an accurate reflection of the life you'll find bustling within Denver's walls.
Perhaps the best time to visit The Mile High City is during the autumn months when the air is crisp and nature is at its finest. But no matter when you visit, you’re bound to have a great time exploring the unique attractions Denver has to offer.
