5 Must-Visit Places in Vancouver

Vancouver is one of the best cities in the world (in our biased opinion!). We're from British Columbia, in the Okanagan Valley and have traveled to the lower mainland many times. Vancouver is a sprawling city with a population of approximately 4 million, including surrounding and greater suburbs. Although the city is quite spread out, it's easily navigated by Seabus, local bus, and Skytrain.
There are many incredible things to see in this popular destination, but here are the Top 5:
Stanley Park
Named after Lord Stanley, a British politician, this 100-acre urban oasis dominates the northwestern edge of the downtown core. And it isn't just a park. On the grounds, you can visit an aquarium, dine at fabulous restaurants, go on many hikes and walks, and spend time lounging at one of the beaches. Filled with over 500,000 trees, this is quite the natural getaway! Stanley has even been recognized as one of the best urban parks in the world. Pack a picnic and spend the day, this is an excellent place to chill out, enjoy some nature and especially, wander along the 8.8 km seawall.
Rogers Arena
This downtown sports arena is home to the Vancouver Canucks hockey team, and venue for many concerts and events. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, this was where the ice hockey games took place. The arena can fit approximately 19,000 spectators during a concert, and a little less during a hockey game. While you're in Vancouver, definitely try to see a Canucks hockey game, or go to a concert. If you can score tickets, Madonna will be performing here this October.
Gas Town
This national historic site is located in the northeastern end of the downtown area and is a must-see on your trip to Vancouver. Gas Town was named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, who (among other things) was a seaman from Yorkshire, England. He arrived in 1867 to open the area's first saloon. These days, Gas Town is a hip area with festivals, nightlife, many tourist attractions, and a large waterfront area with shops. Make sure to check out the steam clock, and try to time your visit for the International Jazz Festival.
Capilano Suspension Bridge
If you're brave enough, you should definitely go for a walk along the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which was built in 1889. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver, and it's just a short drive from the downtown area. If you're not driving, there are shuttles available. This swinging bridge is 450 feet across and 230 feet above the Capilano River. Depending on how much of an adventure junkie you are, you could also consider going on the Cliffwalk or Treetop excursions, both of which are new to the park, and will have your adrenaline pumping in no time. Even if you're scared of heights, it's still recommended to come here for the incredible views of the forest, and for the lights at Christmastime.
Granville Island
This lovely little island is a top attraction in Vancouver, and is easily reached by bus or by boat. An island in the middle of the city? Yep! Granville Island is known for its fresh farmer's markets, relaxed restaurants, incredible art shops, and is a great place to hop on a boat and explore English Bay. Whale watching and kayaking tours also leave from here. Granville Island is buzzing with excitement and is the best place to spend the afternoon, especially during the weekend.
