5 Golden Tips for Senior Solo Travellers

Being a senior solo traveller is not what it used to be, and today’s seniors are embracing the freedom that the experience can provide. These five tips can help them make the most of the experience.
Start Small
Try single senior travel tours if you want to head out alone and also make new friends. These tours offer everything from full, all-inclusive packages to less structured itineraries with more options and open days to fill with activities that you choose.
Pace Yourself
Vacations for singles over 60 are meant to be relaxing. Unless you want to cycle through the Pyrenees or hike the Inca Trail, most solo seniors are looking for travel that is stimulating but not overwhelming. Cities, particularly ones where you speak the local language, are good places to start. Once you get comfortable with senior solo travel, it will be easier to venture out to destinations outside of more urban centres.
Think Outside the Box
While joining a group tour might be more predictable, it can still be fun. Look for tours that specialize in unique culinary or cultural experiences. A river cruise down the Danube will offer a much different experience than a stay at a Mexican all-inclusive resort. Think through what you want from your trip – new experiences? Cultural diversity? Follow your heart and live out your lifelong dreams.
Knowledge is Power (and makes for a better trip!)
Once you know what you’re looking for, do your research so you know exactly what you’re getting into. While a neighbour may have had a tremendous time on their state capital bus tour through New England, you might enjoy a different experience more. Many websites and travel agents are dedicated to single senior travel tours, so seek them out to help get you on your way.
Travel Essentials
Wherever senior solo travel takes you, a few standard must-dos apply. This includes educating yourself and taking the time to ensure you have adequate travel protection for your needs. If you have coverage, be sure to read your policy and know what you are covered for. Also, don’t rely solely on your government healthcare. Instead, seek out advice from a licensed travel insurance professional, who can help you understand why you need it and recommend coverage. Prepare properly and you’ll be able to revel in your golden travel years.
