“I Have Travel Insurance on my Credit Card” – Sound Familiar?

You’ve heard your clients say it: “I don’t need travel insurance: my credit card will cover me.” But don’t let them walk out the door on that note. Instead, remind your clients that while their credit card may offer travel protection, it might not be as comprehensive as they think.
It’s important for your clients to know and understand just what they’re getting when they rely on their credit card travel insurance benefits.
A good exercise to suggest to your clients, is for them to call their credit card provider to look into what the travel insurance coverage entails. As they do, have them consider what the following might mean if they get sick or hurt while travelling, their flight is delayed on route to their destination or they need to catch up to their cruise in transit, for example.
- Lower overall protection and individual benefits
- Benefits for the primary cardholder only; capped benefits for family
- Benefits capped at age 65
- No or optional medical insurance
- No or optional trip cancellation and interruption benefits
- Coverage only for trips paid for with the credit card providing benefits
- Protection for as little as 8 days of travel (4 days if you’re over 65)
Points such as these can help show your clients that obtaining a more comprehensive travel insurance plan to protect themselves and their investment is a wise decision. And you will feel good knowing you helped your customer fully prepare for their journey!
