Once upon a time, river cruising was synonymous with a luxurious sail along Europe’s most popular waterways with passengers marvelling at fairy tale castles and sipping the region’s finest wines. The very idea of river cruising was practically synonymous with relaxing.
But as river cruising catapulted in popularity, more remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations became available, and river ships eventually began appearing on other continents, including South America and Asia. With the expansion of the industry, river cruise offerings and in-port excursions have also become increasingly more varied and adventurous. But even in light of all its growth, selling the concept of river cruising to active and soft-adventure travellers remains a challenge.
That all changes in 2017, when Butterfield & Robinson, a Toronto-based travel company known for its luxury walking and biking adventures, launches a new Mekong Grand Journey in February 2017.
Visiting three countries — Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, the trip combines amazing walking and biking routes, some of the region’s top hotels, and a luxurious sailing onboard the Aqua Mekong, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a front-row look at life on the river
“While the journey entices with history and mystique, B&R’s modern footprint makes this trip unlike any other,” says Trip Designer Kristi Elborne. “Along the way travellers will cycle our prized routes in the most remote and spectacular settings. They’ll be joined by a remarkable team of guides and experts who will bring cultural legends to life thanks to their unparalleled access and knowledge.”
Among the highlights, travellers will venture into Angkor Wat and the UNESCO-protected Luang Prabang. There’s plenty of local activities along the way, including a traditional Lao Baci well-wishing ceremony, a sumptuous Khmer meal overlooking the 12th century Angkor temple, and of course, the unexpected encounters that can only happen when exploring a destination on two feet and two wheels.
Accommodations include the Amantaka in Luang Prabang, set on a large garden estate and Amansara, once the summer home of King Sihanouk.
The 10-day journey starts from Luang Prabang, Laos on February 1, 2017. For more information visit www.butterfield.com/trip/mekong-grand-journey.
