Fairmont Hotels veteran Indu Brar is moving to Fairmont Empress in Victoria, B.C., where she will take on the role of general manager. Brar, the hotel’s first-ever first female GM, will oversee the historic property’s two-phased, $30+ million renovation which includes a refresh of all guestrooms, restaurants, the lobby, hotel meeting space and the Willow Stream Spa.
Raised in Calgary, Brar became a fan of the hotel business during her first job as a switchboard operator at the Chateau Airport hotel. After taking on roles with increasing responsibility, she became the director of rooms at what is now Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in 1997. Later she held the same position at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise before being promoted to director of operations in 2003. In 2007, she became the general manager of Fairmont Winnipeg.
In 2010, she moved to the U.S., first as the hotel manager at The Plaza, a Fairmont Managed Hotel ad then as the general manager of the Fairmont Battery Wharf.
In 2013, the lure of Canada’s west coast proved to be too strong, and she accepted the general manager position at the Fairmont Waterfront where she oversaw the hotel's renovation.
