LGBTQ Game Of Thrones Locations In Advance Of Pride Month

Pride Month is only two weeks away. To celebrate the occasion premiere gay tour provider Out Adventures is promoting the destinations that inspired the HBO behemoth.
King’s Landing and the Red Keep
In last Sunday’s penultimate episode of Game of Thrones titled ‘The Bells’, Daenerys Targaryen went full Mad Queen and laid waste to the Red Keep and burnt King’s Landing to the ground. Luckily Dubrovnik – the inspiration and major filming location behind King’s Landing – remains unburnt. Dubrovnik is the capital of historic Croatia and is instantly recognizable for its terracotta roofs, medieval architecture and the Dalmatian coastline it sits on.
Out Adventures visits Dubrovnik on its annually sold-out gay cruise, Croatia: Gay Dalmatia Cruise. Note: A lesbian-only equivalent of Out Adventures’ Croatia cruise will is launching online June 1, 2019.
The Frostfang Mountains
Our handsome hero, Jon Snow, spent much of the early seasons winning over wildlings and combating undead beyond the wall. Many of the blistery scenes shot beyond the wall – including The Frostfang Mountains – were filmed in Iceland, aka The Land of Fire and Ice, during the country’s notoriously lengthy winter. Despite the volatile climate, Iceland remains one of the most-LGBT welcoming countries in the world and offers winter travellers a slew of sensational outdoor attractions to choose from. Not least of which includes the chance to photograph the Northern Lights.

The North
Westeros’ Northern territory got a lot of attention in season 8’s premiere, simply titled ‘Winterfell’. Of specific note was a gorgeous cascading waterfall that acted as the backdrop for a passionate kiss shared between Daenarys Targaryen and Jon Snow. While digitally enhanced, the waterfall in question is actually very real and a short drive away from Iceland’s cosmopolitan capital, Reykjavik. In Icelandic, the waterfall is known as Skógafoss and is a popular attraction for gay men and lesbian women interested in photographing it’s almost always present rainbow.

Winterfell
One of the most important destinations highlighted throughout both George R. R. Martin’s novels and the HBO adaptation is Winterfell. The last of the surviving Stark children are the rightful heirs to this massive castle as well as its surrounding lands. And despite the damage sustained during the aforementioned ‘The Long Night’ battle, Winterfell is still standing. While most of the Winterfell scenes are shot in a studio rendering, Castle Ward in Northern Ireland has acted as a stand-in for the fictional site.
Gay travellers can hike Ireland’s verdant countryside and visit “Winterfell”, aka Castle Ward, on a Custom & Tailor Made Itinerary with Out Adventures.
Dorne
One of the most inspired characters on Game of Thrones was the short-lived bisexual Prince Oberyn Martell. While his storyline began and ended in season 4, the sensual southerner hailed from the desert kingdom of Dorne. His homeland was later shown in great detail as the story shifted to his vengeful Paramore and lethal daughters, The Sand Snakes. Their sunny castle and whimsical water gardens were all filmed in Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage City, Seville. Spain remains ever-popular amongst LGBT jetsetters as a welcoming destination that perfectly balances a beach holiday with culture and cuisine.
Out Adventures is currently planning an all-gay Camino de Santiago hiking tour. Stay tuned!
