If you think that dream trip to Asia is totally out of reach, you might be surprised. Results from the latest Hotel Price Index (HPI) from Hotels.com indicate that there are plenty of reasonably priced hotel options for Canadians looking to travel abroad this season.
Across Europe, in such popular destinations as London, Paris, Rome and Venice, three-star hotel rooms are averaging less than C$ 200 per night. Same goes for top U.S. getaways, including San Diego, San Francisco and Orlando.
Travellers looking for the ultimate savings should consider a trip to Bali or Bangkok, where two-star rooms are averaging just $33 a night. Or for a resort getaway, two-star rooms in Phuket are averaging just $43 per night.
On the other end of the spectrum, travellers looking for affordable luxury should think about Berlin, Istanbul or Bangkok where five-star rooms are averaging $203, $205 and $208 respectively. And consider this: $200 per night for these luxury properties is less than the average at some three-star hotels in Canada.
Still there is definitely value to be found in Canada. According to the HPI, the best value in the nation can be found in Edmonton, where three star hotels averaged around $140 a night in 2015. Winnipeg was a close second at $143 per night. In Banff, which as the most expensive hotel averages in the country, a three-star hotel averages around $188 per night.
"It's always good to do a little research before making a final choice of hotel or destination as it can really help in stretching your travel budget," said Josh Belkin, Vice President & General Manager, North America for Hotels.com brand. "Upgrading your stay may not cost as much as you think; alternatively, going down a star could save quite a bit in some cases, especially if the amenities provided by that extra star are not vital to your stay."
Travellers looking for the Canadian cities that offer the best value for luxury accommodations should check out Vancouver, with an average of $391 per night at the five-star level and Toronto at $482 per night.

It is important to note that there is no international oversight on star ratings and each country manages its own rating system. Before booking any hotel, travellers should understand that that there might be a disparity when booking rooms with the same star ratings in different countries.
Checking out guest reviews, advises Hotels.com, is a good way to judge a hotel’s standards. (Hotels.com has more than 20 million verified guest reviews from people who have actually stayed in the hotels they are reviewing.)
