No doubt, getting to Fogo Island Inn, located in a region that is frequently nicknamed one of the four corners of the earth, requires a little planning. For people flying on commercial airlines, the most convenient connections to Fogo Island are on flights to Gander International Airport via Halifax Stanfield InternationaAll Airport or St. John’s International Airport.
Now, thanks to a new partnership between Fogo Island Inn and the Alt Hotels brand of Canada’s Groupe Germain Hotels, travellers on their way to Fogo have the chance to explore a little more of Atlantic Canada.
Confirmed guests of Fogo Island Inn can stay at the Alt Hotel Halifax Aiport and book an optional upgrade that includes a limo tour of the city and dinner at waterfront restaurant, Bicycle Thief.
The following morning, you'll board Air Canada Flight 8862, which departs at 11:40 a.m. and arrives in Gander 1:30 p.m. Upon arrival, a Fogo Island Inn community host will greet you and accompany you to Fogo Island.
Once in Fogo, the options are limitless. Learn about the region’s rich history, complete with shipbuilders and cod fisherman, witness local artisans at work and see how they are handcrafting in new trends in Canadian arts, or just linger by the shore and watch the region’s famed icebergs float by.
Food Day Canada
On July 30, Fogo Island Inn celebrates Food Day Canada with a trip to Little Fogo Islands. Accompanied by two chefs, guests explore the islands’ abandoned cottages and fishing stages, many of which served as inspiration for Fogo Island Inn.
Although Little Fogo Islands were once a thriving community, they now see only the occasional seasonal visitors. Now considered a heritage site, the community includes a charming restored church that was consecrated back in 1867 and wild natural attractions to discover.
After the tour, guests will enjoy a uniquely Atlantic feast, prepared from local bounty, including wild plants and berries, island-grown vegetables and pot-caught cod. The boarding pass for the Food Day Canada adventure starts from C$250, and includes a place on the ship and the Food Day Canada feast on Little Fogo Islands.
