When fall arrives, it makes an artistic statement that we just can’t ignore. The turning of the leaves eases us into another harsh winter by making a splash of bold colors on the canvas of so many U.S. destinations. So if you are a diehard leaf-peeper then you’ll want to pay a special visit to these fall foliage playgrounds that offer a magical ride on their color-coated carpets.
Philadelphia, PA: Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
In 1887, the area that comprises the Morris Arboretum was nothing but vacant, rolling hills. That was until it was transformed into a summer home by John and Lydia Morris, who were also brother and sister. Centuries later, manicured lawns and an array of lush colorful trees attract many visitors seeking a pleasant stroll, bird watching or capturing a 360-degree of the arboretum’s exquisite landscape from the adventure tree.
Portland, OR: Portland Japanese Garden
Ever wanted to see how fall decorates Japan’s landscape? Well you don’t have to travel across the globe because a gorgeous sampling of the country's foliage can be found within our borders in Portland. All five of the gardens here emulate the Japanese culture with touches that convey deep meanings. For example, the stones strategically placed throughout the Portland Japanese Garden represent the “bones” of the gardens, the elements of water is translated as life and the plants signify the different seasons.
Monkton, MD: Ladew Topiary Gardens
The Ladew Topiary Gardens are an impressive sight year-round, but its award-winning presence gleams brilliantly once fall has seeped into the leaves of its colossal trees. Amid the colorful natural trees are many topiary designs fashioned in the likeness of animals and oddly trimmed trees that are sprinkled along its 22 acre landscape. Ladew Topiary Gardens was purchased by its namesake Harvey S. Ladew in 1930, and his passion for hunting is showcased in the manner in which the topiaries are displayed. With 15 garden rooms to explore, it also gives visitors ample opportunity to become one with the bright side of nature.

From riding the swan boats in the summer to exploring the monuments scattered throughout its terrain, this garden is as steeped in attractions and history as it is in nature's singular beauty.
