Summer may be over, but Canada’s theme parks are just starting to rev into high gear. Several major theme parks around the nation have announced they’ll be rolling out new big-ticket attractions for the coming year. If you’re already starting to think about next summer’s getaways, here are a few new attractions to watch out for.
Life is about to get wetter at the Vaughn, Ont.-based theme park Canada’s Wonderland. The park, a member of the Cedar Fair family, will be showcasing two new high-adrenaline thrills, including a new high-speed slide at its water park, Splash Works, and a new first-of-its-kind thrill ride at the main park.
The new Muskoka Plunge, an 18-metre (60 foot) tall waterslide complex will feature four speed slides. Riders step into an enclosed launch chamber and then suddenly plummet into a high-speed free fall that takes them through S-curves and 360-degree loops at heart-racing speeds approximately 40 km/h.
If soaking wet loop-di-loos aren’t your thing, there will be plenty of dry ways to turn upside down at Canada's Wonderland, which is adding Soaring Timbers to its line up. This ride, made up of two massive rotating gondolas, swing riders through big loops while they rotate 360 degrees.
For a limited time, Canada's Wonderland is offering 2017 Season Passes for just $68.99 (a discount of $21 over this year’s Season Pass price). New Passholders will receive one free visit this year and renewing Passholders will receive a free 2016 Fast Lane Plus pass valid for one visit this season.
In Montreal, La Ronde is Quebec's best bet for theme park thrills and family entertainment. The Six Flags park, which earlier this year became the first in Canada to offer a Virtual Reality Coaster, has announced it will add Titan to its roster of roller coasters for the coming year.
Inspired by the divine beings from Greek Mythology, Titan is a massive giant swaying pendulum that can hold up to 40 riders and sends them swinging over the park until they feel weightless. The ride, which reaches speeds of up to 112 km/h reaches nearly 45 metres in the air.
Through Sept. 5, La Ronde is offering a savings of more than 70 per cent on 2017 season passes. The pass includes a free upgrade to a Gold Season Pass which provides admission to any other Six Flags theme park as well as free parking and a free sport bottle. With the 2017 season pass, guests receive unlimited entry for the rest of 2016, including park admission to Fright Fest 2016.
While it is less of a theme park and more of a tourism complex, the Québec City-adjacent Valcartier Vacation Village, which earlier this year announced it had acquired Quebec’s famed Ice Hotel, continues to expand its entertainment empire.
The project has announced it is opening a new four-star hotel and a brand new indoor waterpark, being billed as a “first in Quebec,” this December. Sporting a Polynesian theme, the park will cover more than 102,000 square feet and include a wave pool and more than 14 waterslides, all heated year-round to a balmy 30 degrees C. Five of the slides will stand more than 15 metres high. There will also be a multi-activity adventure river, as well as relaxation areas, lounge chairs throughout the facility, and private cabanas.
The adjacent hotel will include a variety of room types, ranging from suites to accommodate family needs to 12-person dorm rooms, which should prove attractive for visiting student groups.
