Toronto haters across Canada won’t like this.
A study from KAYAK (www.kayak.com), the world’s leading travel search engine, found that Ontario’s capital city was the most popular destination for Canadians in 2017, replacing London at the top of the podium and skipping past Las Vegas.
The 2016 list of most popular holiday spots for Canadians had Toronto in third place and Vancouver in the fifth spot. For 2017, however, there were three Canadian cities in the top 10, with Toronto on top, Vancouver in the third spot and Montreal in the 10th position.
No doubt the Canada 150th birthday celebrations had a role in boosting staycations this year. The year 2017 also marked Montreal’s 375th birthday party, complete with festivals, awesome light shows and other festivities.
Warm weather destinations continue to be a favourite for Canadians, which is no surprise given our cold winters. This year’s top 10 included Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale.
The KAYAK study also looked at travel habits of Canadians and Americans and found that while Americans travel more often, Canadians travel further (an average of 7,000 km per user this year, about 1,200 km’s more than Americans).
Canadians also travel more than our friends south of the border, with the average vacationer in Canada taking 13 days holidays versus 10 in the U.S.
Here’s a list of the most popular destinations for KAYAK users in Canada for 2016 and also for 2017.
