The island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean is apparently the best destination to celebrate a honeymoon in the world as the destination took home first position in the 2018 World Travel Awards, which were held in Lisbon, Portugal on December 1. St. Lucia was nominated alongside some of the world's most popular honeymoon destinations, including Cartagena, Jamaica, Maldives, Maui, Hawaii, Mauritius, Miami Beach and Paris.
This is the tenth time that the island has received this award, but only the first since 2010. According to the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, no other destination has won this prestigious prize as many times as St. Lucia; its closest rival being Mauritius, which has won the prestigious title four times.
The Chairman of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) Nicholas John, received the award on behalf of the destination.
"This award places St. Lucia in a class of its own in terms of honeymoons and romance," said Saint Lucia Chief Executive Officer Tiffany Howard. "Being named one of the most beautiful destinations in the world is a huge honor, but surpassing them all is an even more rewarding achievement. "
To commemorate this award, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) installed a huge billboard in front of Hewanorra International Airport on Sunday, December 2, 2018, announcing its latest title and featuring some aspects of the island, which has become the honeymoon destination of choice.
On September 23rd, Saint Lucia was named Caribbean's best honeymoon destination at the Word Travel Awards, which allowed it to compete for the world title.
The World Travel Awards is the most prestigious and sought after awards program in the global tourism and travel industry. It was established in 1993 to recognize, reward and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the tourism industry.
In 2018, the World Travel Awards celebrated their 25th anniversary.
