Phoenix, Arizona--Stereotypical, Yet So Much More
Destination & Tourism Brian Simpson February 22, 2017

When we think of Phoenix, Arizona, we tend to think in stereotypes - desert, cacti, golf, aging snowbirds, and heat…a dry, dry heat. And while those are all true, and just part of what makes Phoenix unique, there’s so much more to experience, for every age group. Think hiking and outdoor adventures, sports, culinary experiences, wine tours by kayak and goat yoga. Yes, goat yoga.
That's what we heard when TravelPulse Canada sat down with Doug MacKenzie, Director of Media Relations for Visit Phoenix and Ian Tillson, Canadian Representative for Visit Phoenix at ITN Travel Group, to learn more about why travellers should visit Phoenix.
“In 2016 we thought there’d be a dip in visitors, but our numbers actually increased, and we’re seeing levels we haven’t seen since 2008," said MacKenzie, who attributed the growth to increased nonstop service from Canada and support from the travel trade. “We’ve seen more nonstop service from Air Canada and WestJet, and great support from their respective tour operators. And the travel trade has been instrumental in our continued growth. And so we want to remind them that our tourism sales department is available to help the travel trade to grow their business to Phoenix and helping develop Greater Phoenix itineraries and beyond, including Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Sedona, the Grand Canyon and more.”
There are so many unique and interesting experiences waiting in the Greater Phoenix area. For the outdoor enthusiast, there’s no shortage of outdoor space and activities for every skill level, from scenic strolls to challenging hikes. Sports buffs can take in a game from of one of Phoenix's 4 major professional sports teams, and in early April, Phoenix will play host to the 2017 NCAA Final Four.
And for the foodies, Phoenix has no shortage of buzz-worthy eateries including Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, one of Chicago’s titans of deep dish pizza and the chain's only branch outside the greater Chicagoland area. Or perhaps even a kayak trip down the Verde River with a wine tour of the Alcantara Vineyards.
Now back to the goats. Yes, it’s a thing. Yes, we’re talking real goats. And yes, while you’re doing yoga poses in a pasture, a goat or goats may climb on top of you. ‘nuff said.
When asked for some final thoughts Doug had this to pass on to potential Canadian visitors. “Phoenix is a welcoming city to all of our northern friends. We have the sunshine…all we need is you.”
