Montreal to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Olympic Games
Destination & Tourism Monica Poling March 25, 2016

Remember that two-week period when Montréal hosted the Olympic Games? Coming on the heels of a devastating massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics, 1976 would be the first time the Olympic Games would be held on Canadian soil.
Today, Montréal remains the only Canadian city to host a Summer Olympics, although Calgary and Vancouver have hosted Winter Olympics.
For some, it may feel as if the games unfolded just yesterday, but in truth it has been 40 years since the Montréal Olympic Games.
But the event's key moments remain fresh in our memories. It was in Montréal that Nadia Comaneci of Romania scored seven perfect 10s and won three gold medals in gymnastics. It was here that U.S. athlete Bruce (now Caitlin) Jenner won the gold medal for decathlon. American’s dream team Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks, Leo Randolph and Howard Davis Jr. won gold medals in boxing. Princess Anne was a member of the U.K. equestrian team, becoming the first-ever British Royal to compete in the Olympic Games.
Now, just as Montréal is in the midst of planning for its epic 375th anniversary celebration next year, the city is taking a small break to roll out a grand celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Olympic Games.
Throughout 2016, there will be 40 special events commemorating the the 1976 games. Of course there will be plenty of sporting events; football, baseball, tennis and rugby competitions are all in the works. But there will also be music events, including an open-air concert by Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under the direction of Maestro Kent Nagano, which will unfold on the Esplanade Financière Sun Life located next to the Olympic Stadium.
Urban art, circus performance and the biggest collection of street cuisine in Québec will all make an appearance. Even skateboarding and video games will get an honoured slot at the table.
The Olympic Park (Parc Olympique), which hosted the Summer Games four decades ago, is rolling out ts series of commemorative events, starting with "Souvenirs from 1976,” an exhibit that displays game highlights at three sites throughout the city.
Final event details are still in the works. Follow Tourism Montréal for the most current updates.
