How to Ride on a Mardi Gras Parade Float
Destination & Tourism Monica Poling January 03, 2017

If 2017 is the year you plan to get serious about ticking off items on your bucket list, then tossing “throws” from a Mardi Gras parade float might just be the next item to conquer on that to do list.
Earning a slot on a parade float, however, can be a highly competitive activity. So, if standing on the sidelines just won’t do, here are a few ways to earn a slot on a Mardi Gras parade float.
Book a Hotel Package with the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel
Every year, the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel offers a number of highly coveted Mardi Gras packages, including the Mardi Gras Insider’s Experience. With rates starting from $1,799 per night, you’ll not only enjoy a front row view to the action, you’ll be part of the action. The package includes accommodations in an Executive Suite, as well as the opportunity for two people to ride in the Krewe of Orpheus parade. The Krewe of Orpheus, which was co-founded by Harry Connick, Jr., runs one of the most popular Mardi Gras’ parades. The package also includes two krewe costumes, masks and safety harnesses for the float ride, as well as enough beads to keep you busy for the entire parade route. You’ll also enjoy lunch with the krewe on the day of the parade, as well as two tickets to the Orpheuscapade celebration, which follows the parade. In addition to receiving welcome Hurricane cocktails upon your arrival at the hotel, you’ll also enjoy a Mardi Gras Recovery Kit that includes your choice of Bloody Mary’s or mimosas for two, as well as an accompanying pain reliever to help chase away the evening’s excesses.
Win a Spot on a Parade in Shreveport
Over in Shreveport, the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau is giving away a Mardi Gras Vacation Sweepstakes, which includes two spots on a float in the 2017 Krewe of Highland parade. The prize also includes hotel accommodations for two, a supply of “throws” and a gift certificate to dine at a local restaurant. Now in its 22nd year, the Krewe of Highland parade follows a route through Shreveport’s historic Highland neighbourhood on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017 at 1 p.m. and is one of the largest neighbourhood parades in North Louisiana. The parade has become known for its unusual throws, which include not only beads but also grilled hot dogs, packaged ramen noodles, Moon Pies. All entries must be received by 12 a.m. CST on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 and the prize does not include transportation to Shreveport. Other restrictions apply.
Some of Louisiana’s Krewes (Mardi Gras Parade Organizers) feature memberships that are open to the public, for a fee. The Krewe of Morpheus, for example, features annual membership dues starting from $465, which include a ride on a parade float, a costume, admission to the pre-parade Morpheus Bash as well as the post parade party. Travellers planning well in advance—like those looking forward to 2018—can book a deluxe membership package which also includes a safety harness and plenty of throws to toss from the float.
