Back in 2011, the Bay of Fundy narrowly missed out being included on the new “seven wonders of the world” list. Although it didn’t quite make the cut, it did hold the distinction of being the only Canadian location on the list of 28 finalists. And for good reason.
Located between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the bay hold’s the world’s record for the highest tidal peak ever recorded. On any given day, 115 billion tons of water flow in and out of Fundy, with an average tidal range of about 55 feet. The highest point ever recorded clocked in at nearly 71 feet.
Without a doubt, the Bay of Fundy offers a stunning variety of activities for soft-adventure seekers. During low tide, you can walk along the ocean floor, while high tide is the perfect time for kayaking in and out of the caves that dot the area.
For adventurers who like to blend a little town with their country, Saint John, N.B. is the only city located on the Bay of Fundy. A stay in Saint John, Canada’s first incorporated city, serves up a blend of amazing waterfront views, well-preserved historical sites and a thriving culinary scene.
This summer, Saint John is also amping up its national and international profile with a number of festivals and events, including the Area 506 Festival, Sculpture Saint John, Marathon by the Sea and Fundy Fringe Festival.
From July 29-31, the Area 506 Festival celebrates the New Brunswick’s distinctive culture. Local artists, performers and culinary offerings are all highlighted in a weekend that culminates with a Waterfront Concert finale.
Every two years, the city hosts Sculpture Saint John and invites eight sculptors from around the globe to carve 120-tonnes of New Brunswick granite into pieces of public art. Watch these artists in action along the Saint John waterfront, Aug. 4-Sept.17.
Interested in exploring Saint John’s roots as Canada’s first incorporated city? Be sure to pop over to the New Brunswick Museum, where you can hear whale songs, view the Tidal Tower and participate in interactive activities that highlight the province’s forestry, military and shipbuilding roots.
