Located in southern Croatia, the city of Dubrovnik has been through its battles, suffering an earthquake in 1667 and a war in the 1990s.
But Dubrovnik is resilient. The Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, palaces, fountains and monasteries remain intact, making Dubrovnik one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea and an addition to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
And with Condor Airlines flights from Canada, it’s easy to get to.
There are so many great things to see and do on your travels to Dubrovnik, the city that George Bernard Shaw once called “The Pearl of the Adriatic.” Here are just a few.
Walk down Stradun: It’s the limestone-paved equivalent of Main Street, U.S.A. On one end of Stradun is the Onofrio Fountain, otherwise known as the Great Onofrio Well, which was built in 1438. At the other end of the Stradun there is a bell tower with a clock that was built in 1444. In between, the Stradun, also known as Placa, is lined with many shops and cafes – and the stone houses, fountains, statues and churches are just a short distance off Stradun.
See a festival: There are many events that take place throughout the year that you should enjoy, but one of the most famous is the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Celebrating its 68th year, the festival take place from July 10 to August 25 and includes theater, opera, music and dance events at various venues around the city. If you’d like something a little sweeter, the International Festival of Jams & Marmalades takes place during the first weekend of October, followed by the Dubrovnik Film Festival.
Visit "Game of Thrones" filming locations: Some of the Game of Thrones filming was completed in Croatia and Dubrovnik, and was used in many outdoor scenes that were set in King’s Landing, including the Minceta Tower. Several other locations in Croatia near Dubrovnik were also used, not just for King’s Landing but for scenes set in Qarth and Slaver's Bay. If you can’t get enough of GOT, this is a must-see and will give you an incredible respect for the country’s gorgeous landscapes.

See important historical landmarks: Dubrovnik is rich in history and stopping by the Revelin Fortress, Minceta Tower, and Lovrijenac Fortress is a must. Revelin Fortress was built in 1463 as protection to the eastern City Gate. The Minceta Tower is a circular tower that was built in the 15th century to defend against attack from Ottoman forces. At Fort Bokar, you can see the views of another fortress, Lovrijenac, a rock-top fortress that guards the city from the north.
Life’s a beach: When you want to slow down, sit on the beaches of Dubrovnik. The most popular beach is Banje, where you can see the Old Harbour and the island of Lokrum. If you have some spare time, take a day trip over to the most peaceful island of Lokrum, where no cars are allowed and nobody stays overnight. Here you can swim in the Dead Sea and tour remnants of a 12th or 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic basilica, or just sit and relax.
