Toronto's downtown airport has picked up a major honour.
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport was named one of the world's best airports at the Skytrax World Airport Awards, the premier international airport awards voted on by nearly 14 million passengers worldwide. Billy Bishop Airport was ranked the tenth best airport in the world in the under 5 million passenger category, representing the sixth year Toronto's City Airport has won a prestigious Skytrax award.
The 2019 Awards are based on millions of airport survey questionnaires completed by more than 100 different nationalities of air travellers, covering 550 airports worldwide. In the independent survey, passengers continue to rank Billy Bishop Airport highly across 39 key performance indicators, including fast check-in times, ease of access to the terminal, and the courtesy and efficiency of airport staff.
"What an incredible honour to be named one of the best airports in the world by Skytrax World Airport Awards," said Geoffrey Wilson, CEO of PortsToronto, owner and operator of Billy Bishop Airport. "To be recognized by Skytrax for the sixth year speaks volumes about our airport team and partners and highlights our united commitment to excellence in customer service and the passenger experience at Billy Bishop Airport.
“This international ranking further demonstrates how well this airport serves its passengers and the value it brings to Toronto as an important gateway to the world, located just a few steps from downtown."
Billy Bishop Airport has won a series of passenger-driven awards including being named one of the top airports globally and in North America by Airports Council International's (ACI) Airport Service Quality Awards. Billy Bishop Airport has also been ranked as the fourth Best International Airport by Condé Nast Traveler and has ranked top ten on Private Fly's list for Most Scenic Airport Approaches in the world for five consecutive years.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport also has won the Airports Council International (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Award for Best Innovative Project for the airport's successful implementation of the three-year Airfield Rehabilitation Program. The 2019 Airports Council International (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Awards were held last week at the Airports@Work Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Established in 1997, the annual Airports Council International Environmental Achievement Awards recognize airports that strive to protect and preserve the environment through their programs, initiatives and projects. The Airfield Rehabilitation Program at Billy Bishop Airport modernized the airfield with sustainable infrastructure that included a complete LED lighting and signage retrofit that has reduced energy usage by 75 per cent and the construction of a Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE) facility that has all but eliminated noise impacts in the community associated with high-power aircraft engine run-up operations. In addition to the positive environmental results achieved by the program, the project incorporated innovative measures to reduce the impact of construction on the environment, the community and on airport operations.
