Air Canada has been named one of Canada’s top 100 employers for the fifth consecutive year in Mediacorp Canada Inc.’s annual national employer survey. The awards recognize employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies, and the carrier says that the award “reflects the engaged and energized workforce at Canada's flag carrier”.
"We are very proud to be ranked one of Canada's top employers for the fifth straight year.” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, senior vice president, People and Culture, at Air Canada. “This is important not only for the well-being of Air Canada's 30,000 employees, but also because it supports employee engagement, which is absolutely essential to delivering excellent service to the 45 million customers we carry each year."
Air Canada is in good company, appearing alongside other Canadian companies like TD Bank, Bell Canada, Canadian Tire Corp. and Toronto’s SickKids Hospital, as well as powerhouse global brands like Pepsico, Cisco, Toyota and Procter & Gamble. NAV CANADA, the corporation that owns and operates Canada's civil air navigation service (ANS), also known as air traffic control, is the only other travel or aviation-type company to make the list.
Mediacorp starts with a list of 90,000 employers in Canada which are then graded on eight criteria which have not changed since the programme's inception 19 years ago. The criteria include Physical Workplace; Work Atmosphere & Social; Health, Financial & Family Benefits; Vacation & Time-Off; Employee Communications; Performance Management; Training & Skills Development; and Community Involvement
Several unique employee support and engagement programs were cited by Mediacorp. in honouring Air Canada including state-of-the-art training facilities; generous discounts and perquisites for employees and their families; and programmes to promote health, fitness and wellness. Mediacorp also cited Air Canada's consultative approach to workplace developments, referencing a recent head office renovation project where Air Canada sought employee feedback on everything from storage space design to the final décor.
"Being consistently recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 employers is also further evidence of the successful transformation of Air Canada. “Meloul-Wechsler continued. “We have made culture change a core priority and this has been instrumental in earning us a place among the leading global carriers."
Air Canada has received other recognitions for employee relations and engagement in 2017 including one of the 50 Most Engaged Workplaces in North America for the second consecutive year by Achievers; the second most attractive company brand to work for in Canada according to the Randstad Employer Brand Research independent survey; and one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2017 in areas such as promoting women, including in non-traditional roles, by Mediacorp Canada Inc. The airline was also named in Indeed.com’s list of the top 25 employers in Canada.
