Zurich, Switzerland, gives you the best of many worlds--picturesque alleyways in its charming Old Town, trendy shopping and the best nightlife in Switzerland. Zurich is in the center of Switzerland and on the northern shore of Lake Zurich. It’s an urbane, multicultural city that is also a place of great natural beauty with Alpine panoramas and a lovely lakeshore.

It’s a sophisticated city with more than 50 museums, some 14 of which are devoted to art. The museum of fine arts, the Kunsthaus Zürich, has a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. Another highlight is the Rietberg Museum, one of the leading centers of non-European art in the world. The Swiss National Museum – housed in an over 100-year-old building that looks like a fairytale castle – contains the country's most comprehensive collection of exhibits relating to Swiss cultural history. Its main shopping mile is the Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s great shopping streets. It’s the place to buy watches, international fashion and jewelry. There’s more great shopping in the Zürich-West and Aussersihl quarters.

Zurich is a club city, it has the highest density of pubs of anywhere in the country. Options can range from a house music party in the legendary Kaufleuten to greatest hits from the 80s at the oldest club in the city, the Mascotte, to a gay event at the Labor Bar. Partying starts at 11 and continues well into the morning. In the summer, parties move into the open air.

As you’d expect in a cosmopolitan city like Zurich, eating out is popular and there are many options. There are sidewalk cafes, old world beer halls, family restaurants, trendy restaurants and others specializing in haute cuisine. You’ll find foods of the world in Zurich. Make reservations for the more popular restaurants, and expect table sharing in cafes, tea rooms and less expensive restaurants. Prices always include a 15 percent tip.

Zurich is quick and easy to reach, whether by train, plane or private vehicle. Its international airport has direct connections with over 150 destinations. Just a 10-minute train ride from the airport and situated right in the city center, Zurich’s Main Railway Station is regarded as a European railroad hub. It handles more than 1,900 trains per day. Some of the intercity trains run every half hour from other Swiss or European cities to Zurich. In the city and the region there are rapid transit trains (S-Bahn) running every 15 to 30 minutes. Buses and streetcars run every few minutes.
